CBS News Bay Area Spotlight - Historic Marin City Neighborhood Getting Renovated

August 14, 2025

As the Marin Housing Authority, we are deeply committed to assisting low and moderate-income residents of Marin County and maintaining high-quality affordable housing. It is with great pride that we introduce this video from KPIX, CBS News Bay Area, which highlights a monumental effort central to our mission: the revitalization of the historic Golden Gate Village within Marin City.

Marin City is not just a neighborhood; it is Marin County's only true African American enclave, a community with a rich and vital past. Dating back 83 years to World War II, it was established seemingly overnight as the Marinship shipbuilding operation surged into action, bringing African American workers from the Deep South who sought a better life away from the oppression of the Jim Crow era. The housing built in Marin City, including Golden Gate Village, was once considered a model for the rest of the country, providing homes for new generations of Black Marin residents.

We are thrilled to announce that funding has been secured to completely renovate every housing unit in Golden Gate Village, a project valued at $85 million to renovate 88 existing units. This comprehensive renovation reflects our dedication to preserving history; it's about safeguarding a living monument to people who sought a better life, and ensuring that second and third generations can continue to call this community home. This effort ensures decent, safe, and sanitary housing for our residents, preserving the community's past while protecting its future.
