In February, GGV proudly celebrated Black History Month with a joyful and meaningful community event. The celebration was a great success, bringing together residents, community partners, and guests to honor Black culture, history, and resilience.
LeShawn Holcomb, Executive Director of Griot Theater, delivered a powerful speech reflecting on the meaning of being Black and highlighting the richness and strength of the community. A Griot Theater student also performed Lift Every Voice and Sing, which added a special and inspiring moment to the event. Music was provided by DJ More Bounce, whose family has historical ties to GGV.
We were also grateful to welcome the Sankofa Youth Club who provided freshly made smoothies to residents—a huge hit with both youth and adults. Special guests included the CEO of Burbank Housing and Alicia Gomez, Director of Property Management, Resident Council representatives, Jae Moses and Natalie Broomfield, as well as Juanita Douglas, Executive Director of Tradeswomen Inc.
The Bay Area Discovery Museum's Bianely Regalado led engaging children’s activities that were very well received by families. Youth Experience Sponsorship generously sponsored the bouncy house, which added to the festive atmosphere.
dded to the festive atmosphere. OSK volunteer and resident, Kimberly Robinson along with residents—Angel Mothershed, Rose Troupe, and Natalie Broomfield—supported the event by cooking and serving food. The celebration truly felt like a family gathering. We also held a raffle for $50 gift cards, with free entry tickets so everyone had the opportunity to participate.
It was a wonderful way for the GGV community to come together in honor of Black History Month.
